Product Variations
In this article, you will learn what the Product Variations module is for and what settings it has.
When multiple similar products are distinguished from each other by one feature, switching between these products will help customers find the one that’s right for them. The Product Variations add-on has two purposes:
- Let customers switch between similar products on the product page.
- Help store owners manage the catalog: show the most important items in the catalog and hide all the rest.
The simplest example is a T-shirt with various colors and sizes. We want to:
- Let customers select the color and size on the product page.
- Show different colors as separate products in the catalog—that way the customer will see that the needed color is available.
- Keep different sizes to the product page, without showing them in the catalog—that way there won’t be multiple different products with the same image.
After installing the add-on, you will see the following items in the “Settings” tab:
- Allow own images for child variations - if child variations do not have their own images enabled, they will borrow images from the default variation.
- Allow own feature values for child variations - if child variations do not have their own features, they will borrow features from the default variation.
- Change default variation when it gets hidden or runs out of stock: - ensures that users always see the products that are in stock first. We recommend leaving this setting enabled for better filtering of variations.
- Show all possible feature variants - show the feature option even if it is not available for this variation.
- Give quantity discount on different product variations - consider all variations as one product for calculating quantity discounts. For example, you set a quantity discount of 5% for 10 items of product A1, which has variations A2 and A3. If you activate this setting, the quantity of products A1 (3 items), A2 (5 items) and A3 (2 items) in the cart will be summed up (total 10 items) and a quantity discount of 5% will be applied to item A1.
The quantity discount can be applied to each variation separately. This way, the discount in the example above will only be applied to item A1 if it is not set in the product settings for A2 and A3.
